MURAL MANIA

🌟 INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST // @BLAZEWORKS

Graffiti artist, Blaze Wiradharma, returned to Minto to beautify our downtown cores - this time stopping in both Harriston and Palmerston! After discovering his passion for graffiti art at a young age, Blaze decided to pursue a degree in Illustration at OCAD University in Toronto, where the stimulating city inspired him to apply his graffiti skills to the creation of interior and exterior murals.

Blaze has always known he was interested in art from a young age, and when he discovered graffiti when he was 18, “something just kind of took” him and he knew it was an artform he wanted to explore. Since then, he has founded “Blazeworks” and has worked in many different places over the years, evolving his artwork and what it means to him.

Blaze’s artwork prioritizes the narrative, focusing on concept and storytelling, particularly on culture, technology, and our human relationship with the environment. Last year, this was evident through his mural on the side of the Harriston Legion, featuring his sister daydreaming and perfectly encompassing the feeling of summertime. Throughout the past year of lockdown, Blaze has used this time to do some planning and experimenting with his own personal works. He notes that the Covid-19 pandemic has altered his work because “it’s hard as an artist to be inspired during these tough times where you don’t have the ability to see friends and be outside.”

However, upon returning to Minto he is “feeling refreshed” as he gets back into the swing of things, noting that “It’s just nice to be back here, see some familiar faces, new faces, and make some art in this awesome community.” After spending almost two weeks in Harriston last summer, Blaze began to understand the town and wanted to incorporate a lot of that into this year’s postcard mural. Finally, Blaze adds that anyone who is interested in a career in art, particularly murals, shouldn’t “be afraid to talk to people who own properties and reach out to people” in general. ”Just put up some boards and experiment a

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT // BLAZE

My creative journey began with the discovery and practice of graffiti. I’ve always been someone with a passion for drawing, but graffiti ignited the creative flame which burned the rest of my artistic path. This passion drove me to pursue a degree in Illustration at OCAD University in Toronto. The stimulating environment of the city provided inspiration to continually practice writing graffiti while improving my skills, and meeting influential people. I discovered that my skills developed through graffiti could be directly applied to creating artworks legally in the form of interior and exterior murals. I began commissioned mural work while still in university and founded Blazeworks. After graduating, I continued building my graffiti and mural portfolio. I pursued a career as a freelance mural artist, graphic designer and illustrator which has led me to work with various clients over the years. I relocated to South East Asia from 2017-2019 to further develop my skills and new relationships. This period of time built a new foundation for my creative journey, and rebuilt my connection to my Asian heritage. The narrative of my artwork has always been top priority through graffiti and illustration. These art forms strengthen the importance of concept and story-telling. My artwork has been a vessel to express the adversity I’ve experienced throughout life. I tell stories through art, with a specific focus on culture, technology, and our human relationship to the environment. Moving forward, I aim to translate my expression from walls to canvas, sharing my stories and messages while expanding upon them.

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT // AIDAN @_byaidan

Hi there, my name is Aidan Kenny! I am a muralist and fine artist that came up from graffiti writing in the GTA. I lived my childhood in Burlington and moved to the GlenPark area in Toronto when I was 19. I have no formal fine arts training other than high school but was lucky enough to learn from some of the grandfathers of the graffiti movement in Hamilton. I was recently commissioned by Smoke Dawgs family to paint a memorial portrait piece for the fallen rapper. This piece went viral receiving hundreds of thousands of likes via social media on several Toronto News blogs, gaining the attention of grammy nominated producer Murda beats and other artist in the Hiphop community. Other clients for commissioned pieces include Pressa Armani, The City of Toronto, The City of Burlington, Artusian gallery, and several other private owners. I have always viewed myself as a voice for the unheard youth. It truly amazes me how different and complex each persons perspective can be. No one can look at something exactly the same. That's why, with my portraits I tend to stylize the composition to encourage the viewer to be more suggestive at what they are looking at. I feel it gives more of a unique connection with the work and also a good outlook to have on life, I find.
